1 Start with intent, not volume

The most common keyword-research mistake is chasing big numbers. A keyword with 300 searches that matches exactly what your buyer types is worth more than 5,000 searches of vague, mismatched traffic. Before anything else, sort every keyword by search intent — informational, commercial, transactional, or navigational — and map each one to the single best page on your site.

  • Group keywords into topic clusters instead of treating them as a flat list.
  • Assign one primary keyword per page to avoid competing against yourself.
  • Prioritise low-difficulty, high-intent terms while your site is young.

2 Keyword research tracker template

Copy this into Google Sheets or Excel (paste-special as a table) and track every keyword in one place. These are the columns that actually matter:

Keyword Tracker — spreadsheet columns
Keyword | Search Intent | Monthly Volume | Difficulty | Current Rank | Target URL | Cluster | Priority | Status
--------|---------------|----------------|------------|--------------|------------|---------|----------|-------
how to do keyword research | Informational | 2,400 | 28 | 14 | /keyword-research-guide | Keyword Research | High | In progress
best free seo tools | Commercial | 1,900 | 41 | — | /free-seo-tools | Tools | Medium | Planned
what is on-page seo | Informational | 880 | 19 | 6 | /on-page-seo | On-Page | Low | Ranking

Here's the same structure rendered as a table so you can see it in action:

3 Content brief template

Once a keyword is chosen, brief the article before writing. This template keeps every piece on-intent and optimised from the first draft:

Content Brief — fill in the blanks
CONTENT BRIEF
=============
Primary keyword: __________________________
Secondary keywords: __________ , __________ , __________
Search intent: Informational / Commercial / Transactional / Navigational
Target URL: /__________________________
Title tag (<=60ch):   __________________________
Meta description: __________________________ (140-160 chars)
Suggested word count: ______ (based on top 10 average)
Must-answer questions:
  - __________________________
  - __________________________
Internal links to add:
  - __________________________
Primary CTA: __________________________

4 Topic cluster template

Organise related keywords into a pillar-and-cluster structure. This builds topical authority and internal links Google loves:

Pillar & Cluster map
PILLAR PAGE: /keyword-research (broad head term: "keyword research")
  |
+-- Cluster article: how to do keyword research for free
+-- Cluster article: keyword research tools compared
+-- Cluster article: search intent explained
+-- Cluster article: how to find low-competition keywords
+-- Cluster article: keyword mapping to URLs

Rule: every cluster article links UP to the pillar,
and the pillar links DOWN to each cluster article.

Tip: paste any of these templates into your own doc, then swap the example rows for your keywords. Keep one master tracker and one brief per article.
